Broward County’s pet population got a major boost this year, thanks to nearly 4,000 residents who stepped up to adopt or help a homeless animal find safety.
Broward County Animal Care announced that Fiscal Year 2025 was its strongest year yet, with 3,894 pets adopted — a notable rise from last year — and 568 animals reunited with their owners, a 31% jump that reflects more neighbors checking shelters, microchip scanners, and online alerts when a pet goes missing.
For a community where pets are basically family, these numbers signal a growing culture of compassion.
“These results are a direct reflection of the passion and hard work of our staff, volunteers, and community supporters,” said Doug Brightwell, director of Broward County Animal Care. “Every adoption, every reunion, every saved life represents Broward County at its best — a community united in compassion.”
The shelter’s partnerships with rescue groups also expanded, giving 733 animals a second chance through transfers — nearly 200 more than the previous year.
But beyond the numbers, the shelter says the biggest win is what residents don’t see: shorter shelter stays and less stress on animals. Dogs are finding homes 11 days faster on average, and cats are spending about two fewer days in care. The shelter’s overall live release rate rose to 82.79%, showing continued progress toward keeping pets safe and out of overcrowded conditions.
Brightwell said the momentum is real — but the work isn’t done.
“We are building momentum, but we are just getting started,” he said. “Our focus remains on helping every animal in our care find safety, health, and love — and ensuring that Broward County remains a model for excellent and compassionate animal welfare.”
