Sen. Shevrin Jones Speaks Out as U.S. Democrats Break Ranks to End Shutdown Without Securing Health Care Deal

According to CBS News, the government shutdown has ended, but the political war within the Democratic Party is just beginning. Seven Democratic senators and one independent caucusing with them broke ranks late Sunday, providing the critical votes needed to advance a funding bill and end the longest shutdown in U.S. history. However, they did not secure an extension for key Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits—the party’s core demand.

The move sparked outrage among progressives who accused the eight senators of folding under pressure and ceding leverage on the crisis impacting American families: healthcare costs.

State Senator Shevrin Jones spoke candidly about the shutdown in an Instagram video, stating: “We’ve been living through a government shutdown that first of all should have never happened.”

Referencing the recent Democratic wins across the nation, he asserted, “You still showed up last Tuesday [Election Day] and sent a very very clear message… We are tired of leaders who treat people’s lives like bargaining chips.”

The deal reached by the small, bipartisan group of U.S. senators only guarantees a future vote on the expiring ACA tax credits, which critics argue is a “meaningless” concession unlikely to pass the GOP-led Senate.

For Jones, the compromise missed the mark entirely:

“This shutdown wasn’t about good governance. It was about refusing to deal with the real crisis crushing families and that is the cost of healthcare. Washington forgot who they worked for. If the deal doesn’t lower healthcare costs, protect families, or save lives…it’s not a deal.”

On social media, while many praised Senator Jones for his steadfast position, others vented their frustration directly at the Democratic politicians who sided with Republicans.

One commenter stated: “I’m not seeing enough anger at the eight Democrats who sold out the American people and effectively killed ACA subsidies… This wouldn’t have happened without their votes… Standing up for ACA is the bare minimum, so if you can’t even do that, you’re not fit to serve.”

While the deal ensures the government is funded through late January and reverses shutdown-related layoffs, the party’s failure to extend the health subsidies has left the Democrats in a compromised position.
