The African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), in partnership with the Friends of AARLCC, will host its second annual memorial lecture honoring the late Dr. Niara Sudarkasa — a renowned cultural anthropologist, scholar, and Fort Lauderdale native whose groundbreaking career paved the way for generations of Black academics and leaders.
The event will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 4 p.m. at AARLCC in Fort Lauderdale. It is free and open to the public, though registration is required.
Born Gloria Albertha Marshall, Dr. Sudarkasa was a prodigy who graduated from Dillard High School at 14 and entered Fisk University at 15 before earning her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College. She went on to achieve several historic firsts — becoming the first African American woman to teach at Columbia University, the first appointed assistant professor of anthropology at New York University, and the first Black faculty member in the University of Michigan’s Department of Anthropology. Her career culminated with her appointment as the first African American woman president of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sudarkasa was also a prolific author and researcher, known for influential works such as Where Women Work and The Strength of Our Mothers. In 2002, she served as AARLCC’s Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence and later donated her archives, which remain the second-largest manuscript collection at the library.
This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, J.D., Ed.D., President and CEO of Benedict College, who also made history as the first woman to lead the institution.
“Dr. Sudarkasa’s life and work showcase the powerful impact of scholarship, leadership, and service,” said Dr. Artis in a press release. “Her groundbreaking accomplishments continue to motivate generations of scholars and leaders. It is a privilege to help honor her legacy.”
Dr. Tameka Hobbs, historian and AARLCC library manager, added that the annual lecture series ensures Dr. Sudarkasa’s story continues to reach and inspire future generations.
“The creation of this annual lecture ensures that Dr. Sudarkasa’s vision, scholarship, and dedication to knowledge will continue to inspire and educate,” said Hobbs in a press statement.
The event is presented by the Friends of AARLCC, along with the Broward County Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the North and South Broward Alumnae Chapters.
