Tensions came to a head during a charged City Council meeting on September 24, when Councilwoman Katrina Wilson publicly denounced what she described as a pattern of bullying and disrespect during public comment. This stemmed from a heated March 26 meeting, which Hy Lo News reported on.
“You are not going to bully me any longer,” Councilwoman Wilson declared from the dais. “For more than almost a year, every single meeting, I’m being bullied. I’ve attempted to take the high road… but the more I do that, the more I’m subject to the bullying. I will respond to you on every turn.”
One resident who spoke at the recent meeting directly addressed the lasting impact of that incident.
“I am not an idiot, as referred to by this dais on March 26,” the resident said. “When you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences.”
Another speaker attempted to raise concerns involving Councilwoman Wilson but was cut off mid-comment.
“Excuse me, we don’t speak about a councilperson here,” a council member interjected before the resident could finish.
The speaker then continued to voice concerns over broader community issues — including parking, signage, and the need for more responsive city planning.
A third resident delivered a sharp rebuke of the council’s conduct during the March 26 session, stating it had damaged the city’s reputation.
“The complicity shown… is now accessible to the world on YouTube and other media,” they said. “It is etched in our city’s history for all time. It will never be forgotten.”
The March 26 meeting, which drew widespread attention, became tense during debate over a proposal by Councilwoman Wilson to extend council term limits from two to three four-year terms. Dozens of residents attended in opposition. The proposal — which would have triggered a special election costing taxpayers an estimated $200,000 — had already been rejected by the city’s Charter Review Committee.
Tensions erupted when Councilwoman Wilson allegedly singled out resident and former council candidate Karen Hunter-Jackson by name. According to Hy-Lo News and multiple attendee accounts, Hunter-Jackson responded, “Why are you calling me out by name and making this personal?” The exchange escalated into a shouting match and prompted the council to abruptly recess the meeting. The confrontation reportedly continued into the hallway.
Now, Councilwoman Wilson urges her colleagues and city legal staff to take steps to move on from the incident.
“There needs to be a mechanism,” she said. “You don’t have the liberty or the freedom to bully anyone.”
After concluding her statement, Councilwoman Wilson resumed her regular council updates, sharing details about upcoming events. She announced the next Meet Me Monday, scheduled for Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at Walt Frazier Park, and promoted the Second Annual Colors of Cancer Basketball Tournament, set for Oct. 24–26 at the Betty T. Ferguson Center. The Jr. NBA-sponsored event will offer cancer prevention resources and wellness education for the community.
Hy Lo News will continue covering the Miami Gardens Council meetings.
