Black Archives to Launch Family Roots Festival in Overtown, Celebrating National Family History Month in South Florida

Event at Historic Lyric Theater will highlight genealogy, storytelling, and live entertainment

The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida will launch the first-ever Family Roots Festival on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown. The free community event, held in honor of National Family History Month, will run from noon to 4 p.m.

The festival is designed to celebrate family heritage through a mix of education, culture, and entertainment. Highlights include:

  • Genealogy Workshops: Family historians Patricia J. Braynon and Oscar Braynon will guide attendees on how to begin tracing their roots, while author and media executive Jessica Garrett Modkins will share insights on recording family vs. community history.
  • Storytelling & Oral History: Community members will share personal stories, with support from HistoryMiami and the Black Broward Film Project. Guests will also have the chance to record their own family stories for the Black Archives’ digital collection.
  • Children’s Zone: Youth activities presented by the FIU Bob Moses Research Center and Little Lovett Petite Party Experience will make family history fun and interactive for kids.
  • Live Music & Entertainment: Local musicians, cultural groups, and the Lyric’s house vibesetter DJ H2 will bring the energy with live performances throughout the afternoon.

Organizers say the goal of the Family Roots Festival is to honor the past while inspiring future generations to preserve and celebrate their stories.
