Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) brought the community together for a powerful MDEAT Speaks fireside chat featuring Wendell J. Haskins — founder of the Original Tee Golf Classic and a leading advocate for diversity in golf. The conversation explored how golf impacts entrepreneurship, economic empowerment, and community development while highlighting the game’s rich history and potential to create generational wealth.
Haskins shared his own journey of transitioning from the music and entertainment industry into the world of golf. His experience building relationships with celebrities, athletes, and cultural influencers helped him recognize the sport as more than just a pastime — it’s a business ecosystem worth over $90 billion.
“The golf industry is huge,” Haskins told the audience. “You’re talking about travel, agriculture, legal, engineering — there are so many sectors tied to the game besides professional tour play. The economic opportunity is massive.”
Haskins also spoke passionately about his championing of Charlie Sifford, the trailblazing golfer who broke the color barrier in professional golf. Sifford’s courage and perseverance paved the way for generations of players of color to access the sport. His groundbreaking achievements were recognized on the national stage when President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in 2014.
For attendees, the event was more than a lesson in business — it was a call to action. “What I learned was that [Haskins] wasn’t afraid to ask questions,” one guest shared. “Whether it was a celebrity, a CEO, or even the president of the United States, he boldly asked for help and opportunities. That’s what got him to where he is today.”
By blending cultural history, personal storytelling, and actionable advice, Haskins encouraged the audience to think bigger about the game of golf — as a space to build networks, expand businesses, and create pathways to economic power.
MDEAT Speaks continues to spotlight thought leaders and conversations that equip Miami-Dade residents with the tools and inspiration to shape their futures.
