The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce marked a historic milestone on Wednesday, August 27, with the grand opening and ribbon-cutting of its new headquarters at Liberty Square. The move represents a symbolic homecoming, bringing the Chamber back to the community where it was founded more than 50 years ago.
Liberty City has long been recognized as a cultural and entrepreneurial hub for Miami’s Black community. From the 1940s through the 1980s, the neighborhood thrived as a center for Black-owned businesses, professional services, and cultural institutions. Families, entrepreneurs, and innovators helped shape Liberty City into what many considered the beating heart of Black enterprise in Miami. The Chamber’s return highlights both a reconnection with its roots and a renewed commitment to economic empowerment.
The new headquarters, located within the Liberty Square Housing Project at 6401 NW 15th Avenue, Suite 122, spans 3,500 square feet and is designed to serve as more than just an office. It features a business incubator hub dedicated to fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs. The space will provide mentorship programs, technical workshops, workspace solutions, and professional support for small businesses. The Chamber will also continue its role as a clearinghouse for business, guiding entrepreneurs in planning, operations, and financing while connecting them with strategic partners and opportunities.
Community leaders, elected officials, and longtime supporters gathered for the ribbon-cutting, praising the Chamber’s return as a victory for both Liberty City and the broader Miami-Dade business community. “Today is the beginning,” Chamber President and CEO Eric Knowles said during the ceremony. “We, the chamber, have been nomads for 51 years…We have to put blood back into the veins of our main streets.” He added that the once-thriving business corridor is poised for a new renaissance.
The Chamber’s new home in Liberty Square reflects the broader revitalization of Liberty City and is expected to help anchor those efforts. Leaders say the headquarters will focus on empowering entrepreneurs and ensuring that local businesses remain central to the area’s growth.
“We’re like an epicenter of business support services,” says Matthew A. Pigatt, Director of Small Business & Membership Services. “We connect the dots and serve as a clearinghouse of resources for small business opportunities.”
With its return to Liberty City, the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce is not only honoring its origins but also planting seeds for the future — a future in which the neighborhood once again shines as a beacon of Black business and innovation.
