Residents in West Park were left frustrated after the city’s most recent council meeting was canceled due to a lack of quorum, following the absence of three commissioners.
Community members who attended the meeting expressed disappointment, saying the no-shows wasted taxpayers’ time and undermined the voices of residents who came to be heard.
A post circulating on social media by resident Derrick Jones Jr. captured the sentiment, showing a photo of empty seats inside City Hall with the caption: “West Park City Hall, disrespect to the people. Tonight, three commissioners failed to show up, leaving the community waiting and wasting time. There is more than just an empty seat. It’s a blatant lack of accountability to the residents who elected them. Our city deserves leaders who show up, speak up and serve with integrity. If you can’t commit to the job, step aside for those who will.”
The incident has fueled ongoing conversations about tensions within the city’s leadership. Some residents say the absence reflects an ongoing feud among commissioners and the mayor, though details remain unclear.
During the latest Can We Talk Podcast episode, host Janey Tate weighed in on the issue, saying, “Nobody wins when the family feuds. If y’all not showing up, you’re wasting taxpayers’ time. Y’all wasting residents’ time who showed up to have their voice heard. And it’s just not fair.”
