South Florida is about to witness a lyrical collision of past and present, as The Bard in Bars brings Shakespeare’s greatest hits to life—Hip-Hop style.
Created and directed by acclaimed local artist and cultural force Darius V. Daughtry, this innovative Arts Prevail Projects production hits the stage July 25–26, 2025, at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Audiences can expect an unforgettable experience that blends classic monologues and scenes from Shakespeare with modern Hip-Hop rhythm, spoken word, and a live 12-piece string ensemble performed by the New Canon Chamber Collective.

“This show is about making timeless stories accessible and alive,” said Daughtry, the founder of Art Prevails Project, a community-centered arts nonprofit, in a press release. “We’re bridging centuries of storytelling to show that the themes Shakespeare explored—power, love, betrayal, identity—still pulse through our culture today.”
Known for using his voice and platform to empower and uplift, Daughtry is a poet, playwright, educator, and director who’s spent over a decade inspiring communities through performance. With The Bard in Bars, he continues his mission of flipping the script on who gets to tell the stories and how they’re told.
“Darius’s Hip-Hop take on Shakespeare’s classics offers a fresh perspective,” said Jan Goodheart, VP of External Affairs at the Broward Center, in a press release. “It’s no surprise that Darius and his team at Art Prevails Project consistently deliver innovative and engaging performances.”

From the classroom to the concert hall, The Bard in Bars aims to show that Shakespeare isn’t just for English majors and theater buffs—it’s for anyone who understands love, betrayal, ambition, or heartbreak. By remixing the Bard with the beats and bars of today, this show makes centuries-old words feel brand new.
“Darius Daughtry continues to push the boundaries of storytelling,” added Kat Sierra, Director of Operations at Funding Arts Broward, in a press release. “His work exemplifies a commitment to making the arts accessible and inspiring for new audiences.”
Tickets are available now through the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
