LaVon Bracy Davis Advances to Florida Senate Special Election After Defeating Brother in Democratic Primary

Two siblings, Randolph Bracy and LaVon Bracy Davis, went head-to-head in a rare political showdown this June, both vying for the Democratic nomination in Florida’s Senate District 15.

Both Bracy and Bracy Davis are no strangers to public service. Bracy Davis served as a state representative, while her brother previously held the very Senate seat they were fighting to reclaim. Their political roots run deep, grounded in a family legacy of activism. Their mother, LaVon Wright Bracy, is a noted civil rights activist and longtime friend of the late Senator Geraldine Thompson, while their father, Randolph Bracy Jr., is a respected community leader and former NAACP president.

Following Thompson’s passing due to complications from knee surgery, a special election was called to fill her seat. The Democratic primary race drew four candidates: the Bracy siblings, former U.S. Congressman Alan Grayson, and personal injury attorney Coretta Anthony-Smith.

On June 24, voters cast their ballots—and LaVon Bracy Davis emerged victorious, earning nearly 43% of the vote and securing endorsements from both the Thompson family and her own, according to the Associated Press. She has vowed to continue Thompson’s legacy, advocating for voting rights and better pay for public schoolteachers.

But the primary win has caused some friction within the family. Randolph Bracy called his sister’s decision to enter the race after he had already announced his candidacy “disappointing and hurtful.”

Despite the tension, Bracy Davis says she’s committed to “carrying forward the torch of justice, progress, and service” for everyone in District 15—even her brother.

She will now advance to a special general election on September 2, where she will face Republican Willie Montague. The winner will succeed the late Senator Thompson in representing the district.
