Chaos erupted in the chambers of the County Commissioners office in Miami-Dade after a woman vocally objected to the Board’s choice to postpone a vote on a deal between local county jails and ICE.
Videos from inside the chambers show two men forcibly grabbing Camila Ramos, a 36-year old woman and Miami-Dade resident, and dragging her out of the room while she calls out for help. Others attending the meeting began to chant
Earlier this year, Miami-Dade voted to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as Trump ramped up his deportation efforts. Community advocates attended the Thursday meeting in an effort to have their voices heard regarding the matter. Anthony Rodriguez, the current chair, attempted to remove the issue from the county commissions plate by introducing a new item that would give Levine Cava, unilateral power to “sign any agreement needed with Florida or the federal government” with an addendum to retroactively date that power in March, according to the Miami Herald.
Although the item was removed, Rodriguez approved public comments while noting there would be no further opportunities to speak if the item was brought up again. Ramos, who was near the dais, asked for clarity on Rodriguez’s instructions when an unidentified officer approached her and told her to remain silent. When she didn’t “comply”, she was forcibly removed out of the room but the confirmation continued. Attendees of the meeting fought back in an effort to preserve community voices and were met with
Arrest records show Ramos was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence. Z Spicer, another attendant and protester was charged with resisting an officer without violence outside of the courtroom.
