Overtown’s “Third on 3rd” Juneteenth Celebration Returns with Four Days of Culture, History, and Community Empowerment

Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood is once again gearing up to host one of South Florida’s most vibrant commemorations of Black freedom and culture with its annual “Third on 3rd” Juneteenth Celebration. Taking place Thursday, June 19 through Sunday, June 22, this four-day event series will spotlight Overtown’s rich cultural legacy while celebrating the continued resilience, creativity, and unity of the Black community.

With events hosted throughout the neighborhood by community institutions and cultural anchors, “Third on 3rd” offers something for everyone—from family-friendly gatherings and historical tours to live music, art, and grassroots activism.

Thursday, June 19 – Juneteenth Day

The celebration kicks off bright and early with The Overtown Freedom Bike Ride, beginning at Dorsey Park and ending at Historic Vizcaya Gardens (7:30 AM). The day continues with the Gibson Park Family Celebration hosted by the Optimist Club from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering free family fun at 350 NW 12th Street.

For those wanting to dive into the cultural roots of the community, Key 2 MIA Tours will lead two signature experiences: the “Melanin Miami” Walking Tour at 11:00 AM (480 NW 11th St) and “The Cookout” Driving Tour beginning at 1:30 PM from the Lyric Theater (819 NW 2nd Ave).

Friday, June 20 – Community Connection & Culture

Friday night celebrates Black innovation, music, and movement. From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the OCYC Game Night will take place at the Center for Black Innovation (937 NW 3rd Ave), fostering connection among youth and entrepreneurs. At 5:30 PM, Lil Greenhouse Grill will host live music featuring Tessie Porter (1300 NW 3rd Ave).

Cultural immersion continues with Jazz Under A Simple Tree at the Ward Rooming House (7:00 PM) and a night of rhythm and movement at the SocialXchange Line Dancing event (8:00 PM – Midnight) at 1000 NW 2nd Ave.

Saturday, June 21 – Make Music Miami Day

Saturday is packed with civic pride and celebration. The Beauty in the Community Juneteenth Service Project, led by the Historic Black Police Museum (480 NW 11th St), runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Simultaneously, attendees can join the Historic Overtown Legacy Trek (819 NW 2nd Ave) for a deep dive into the area’s storied past.

From 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the Black Archives Freedom Fest continues the celebration at 819 NW 2nd Ave. That evening, Overtown lights up with the First House Juneteenth & Black Music Month Concert (7:00 PM – 10:00 PM at 937 NW 3rd Ave), and the Screening of “ART: By Any Means Necessary”, a powerful documentary by Rachelle at OPAC (1074 NW 3rd Ave), begins at 6:30 PM. The night wraps with the highly anticipated Red Rooster Shrine Party at 9:00 PM (920 NW 2nd Ave).

Sunday, June 22 – Community Brunch & Reflection

Closing out the weekend is a soulful Sunday Brunch at Red Rooster (11:00 AM, 920 NW 2nd Ave), followed by the Overtown Garden Farmers Market & Poetry Potluck from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM (901 NW 3rd Ave). This final event fuses food, spoken word, and local produce in an intimate setting for reflection and unity.
