Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins Announces Over $175,000 in Grants for SafeSummers Program in District 8

Founded by District 8 Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins in 2021, SafeSummers has invested $1 million in summer programming for 5,000+ kids. Summer youth programming options include music, sports, STEM, and more.

As summer approaches, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins is doubling down on her commitment to youth safety and community empowerment in South Dade. Her office has awarded $175,000 in grants through the 2025 “SafeSummers” initiative to support more than a dozen local organizations serving District 8.

Created in 2021 alongside the “SafeSpaces” initiative, SafeSummers was designed to keep young people engaged, safe, and supported during the summer break. Since its launch, the program has awarded over $1 million in funding and reached more than 5,000 youth throughout the county.

“The safety, well-being, and opportunity of our children are at the heart of everything we do,” said Commissioner Cohen Higgins in a press release. “The SafeSummers program is more than a funding initiative—it’s a promise to our families that we are committed to building a stronger, safer future for South Dade’s youth.”

The 2025 SafeSummers grants will fund a wide range of programming, including music, sports, arts, STEM workshops, cultural activities, and community-building projects. The organizations selected are deeply rooted in the community and offer full-time, enriching activities that give young people a positive, structured space during the summer months.

Parents and guardians in District 8 are encouraged to explore the available programs. Most are free or come with a low participation fee, making it easier for families to access meaningful summer opportunities for their children.
