‘Enough Is Enough’: Commissioner Gabela Calls Out Commissioner Carollo Over Mounting Legal Fees, Demanding Transparency

Commissioner Joe Carollo has racked up more than $10 million in legal fees—and it’s the people of Miami who are footing the bill. That eye-popping number comes from a complaint recently reported by Political Cortadito. And now, Carollo is facing even more legal trouble.

Two former employees of the Bayfront Park Management Trust have filed a civil lawsuit against him, claiming they were forced to resign after uncovering suspicious financial activity. In their complaint, they allege that Carollo used the Trust’s resources for personal gain—benefiting himself and his friends.

Commissioner Miguel Gabela has had enough. At a recent City Commission meeting, he called out the ongoing lack of accountability and demanded transparency about how much the city is spending on Carollo’s legal defense. Gabela is pushing for an end to what he sees as a reckless misuse of public dollars.

This isn’t the first time Gabela has spoken up. Back in March 2024, he tried to stop payments to high-profile attorney Benedict Kuehne, citing a serious conflict of interest. Kuehne was representing both the city and commissioners—while also suing the city and Gabela himself on behalf of former Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, who had challenged Gabela’s residency.

For Gabela, it’s not just about politics—it’s about protecting the public’s money and restoring trust in local government.
