Florida Rising, one of the largest independent political organizations in the state, has named longtime strategist and community leader Victricia Simmons as its new Executive Director.
Simmons, a Miami native and Florida A&M University alum, steps into the role after more than a decade with the organization. Her leadership comes at a crucial time as Florida Rising continues to expand its reach across the state, with offices in 10 counties and a focus on building political power in Black, Latinx, and other marginalized communities.
“I am honored to step into this role at such a critical moment in history for our communities and our movement,” said Simmons in a press release. “Florida belongs to all of us, and I am committed to building a future rooted in justice, opportunity, and the unstoppable power of our people.”
Her journey with Florida Rising, formerly known as New Florida Majority, began in 2013. Since then, she has held key leadership roles including Human Resources Manager, Campaign Manager, and Acting Executive Director. Most recently, as Chief of Staff, Simmons oversaw development, finance, and HR operations — helping strengthen internal systems and sharpen the organization’s strategy.
Under her interim leadership, Florida Rising has continued to make a statewide impact, including leading successful campaigns to lower utility rates, expand low-income energy assistance programs, and pass affordable housing policies in Tampa and Broward County. The group has also endorsed over 45 winning candidates in local and state elections since merging into its current form in 2021.
“Victricia’s solid, capable, and determined leadership is exactly the steady helm we need in these turbulent times,” said Board Chair Maria Rodriguez in a press release. “For the past twelve years, she has been integral to building the political power of Black, Latino, and all Floridians.”
The organization has also played a key role in historic shifts, such as flipping Osceola and Pinellas counties blue for the first time in over a decade, and helping lead the Yes on 4 campaign — a ballot initiative to safeguard reproductive rights in Florida.
Board Chair Alphonso Mayfield added, “Her strategic vision, operational excellence, and deep connection to the community will carry Florida Rising to even greater heights.”
As Executive Director, Simmons will lead the organization’s next chapter, focusing on campaigns for voting rights, environmental justice, economic equity, reproductive freedom, and affordable housing.
