Miami Gardens Mayor Rodney Harris opened the April 9th City Council meeting with a stern address aimed at restoring order and professionalism following a contentious meeting two weeks ago that drew criticism for the city.
“I need to address some things before we get started tonight,” Mayor Harris began after a motion to approve the agenda. Referring to the behavior displayed during the previous meeting, Harris made it clear that such conduct would no longer be tolerated. “We are held to the highest standard, and the behavior that was displayed cannot be displayed again,” he said.
He emphasized that the rules applied to public speakers—printed on the back of public comment cards—also apply to councilmembers and others on the dais. The mayor stressed that council meetings must reflect the dignity and responsibility of elected office.
Harris also took a moment to shut down any speculation or misinformation about a possible third term proposal reappearing on the agenda.
“There’s no item on tonight for a third term, and there will be no item brought for a third term,” he declared. “If there was any indication that somebody wanted to have a show tonight, the show has been canceled.”
The mayor’s comments were in direct response to tensions that erupted at the previous meeting, which involved heated exchanges and disruptions surrounding Councilwoman Katrina Wilson’s attempt to extend term limits through a proposed 2025 special election. That proposal was widely criticized by residents and previously rejected by the city’s charter review committee.
Mayor Harris also shared his personal embarrassment about how the council’s behavior was perceived during a recent visit to Tallahassee, where he was lobbying state lawmakers on behalf of Miami Gardens residents.
“For me to sit in front of the state attorney, the representatives, the senators that we were trying to lobby for the cause of the people in this community… and then we’re displayed as folks that can’t get along—I was embarrassed,” he said. “That is not going to happen again.”
As he closed his remarks, Mayor Harris made it clear that his administration is focused on progress and unity.
“We’re going to continue to move this city in the right direction—not getting sidetracked, not being put in a position where we look like we cannot function as a city,” he said.
His comments set the tone for a more disciplined and forward-focused approach to leadership in Miami Gardens as the city continues to grow and confront critical community issues.
