Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones is making waves with the introduction of Senate Bill 666— an effort to create a specialty license plate for the Miami Northwestern Alumni Association. This strategic move to channel funds directly into the heart of the community through the power of school spirit. The proposed plate must include the following according to the proposed bill:
- The plate must bear the colors and design approved by the department.
- The word “Florida” must appear at the top of the plate
- The words “Miami Northwestern Alumni Association” must appear at the bottom of the plate
Senator Jones, representing District 34, has been vocal about the transformative potential of this bill. Through his official channels, he emphasizes that this initiative transcends mere aesthetics. In order to supplement the needs of Miami Northwestern Senior High School students, the proceeds from the license plate sales are earmarked for need-based scholarships, academic programs, and athletic initiatives for the school and its Performing and Visual Arts Center. Annually, the use fee will be distributed to the Alumni Association to perform the duties outlined in the bill.
Since being filed on February 12th, SB 666 has received no pushback as it has moved through the Senate—a clear indicator that this initiative has value and is supported by the larger community. As the bill advances through the legislative process, anticipation builds among alumni and community members eager to see this emblem of pride as they drive.
