Miami-Dade residents are fed up and frustrated as residents are forced to line up overnight in order to get a DMV appointment. It’s gotten so bad that people are camping out in lawn chairs and sleeping in cars outside driver’s license offices. Why? Because appointments are booked out for months online, and without a license or ID, many residents—especially those who are immigrants and working-class—are being blocked from everyday essentials like jobs, housing, or enrolling kids in school.
But here’s where it gets shady: this issue has created a whole underground appointment market. Some people—many with ties to driving schools—are hoarding appointment slots and reselling them for hundreds of dollars. By booking available time slots and flipping them, residents are being ripped off while attempting to handle their business. Officials say some of these driving schools are abusing the system, exploiting their access to mass scheduling tools, and turning public service into a private hustle.
In response, Miami-Dade County is stepping in and cracking down on appointment scalping—working to close loopholes that allow bulk bookings and even opening new offices to help ease the traffic. Thanks to new legislation passed by the County Commission, it is now a misdemeanor to sell government agency time slots with a potential fine of $500.
Commissioner Kevin Cabrera sponsored the legislation as a result of Dariel Fernandez, the new county tax collector, reporting on a ring of appointment scalpers–mainly driving schools. Some residents, however, feel like it’s too little, too late. These issues didn’t pop up overnight, and for years the community has been struggling and silenced.
The county will continue to rectify the issue through new technology and legislation—preventing anyone from making more than one appointment with the same phone number. As Cabrera said to The Miami Herald “no one should have to pay a third party just to access basic government services” especially those that are essential to community safety.
