HistoryMiami Museum Kicks Off Black History Month with “Stories of Resistance from Black Miami” Panel Discussion Featuring Tamara Gant, Commissioner Bastien & More!

HistoryMiami Museum is set to launch Black History Month with an insightful panel discussion, “Stories of Resistance from Black Miami,” on February 1, 2025. The event, part of the museum’s Sip of History series, will spotlight the resilience and activism of Black communities in Miami in the face of racial injustice.

Moderated by LITE-FM’s Tamara Gant, the discussion will feature Miami-Dade County Commissioner Marleine Bastien, former FBI and Miami-Dade Police Department officer Lonnie Lawrence, and Florida NAACP President Dr. Adora Obi Nweze. The panelists, each deeply involved in civil rights advocacy, will share their experiences and reflections on Miami’s ongoing social justice movements.

“Black History Month deserves a strong kickoff with discussions that celebrate the distinguished individuals who inspired Black Miami with their vision and impact,” said Natalia Crujeiras, CEO and Executive Director of HistoryMiami Museum, in a press release. “Stories of Resistance from Black Miami reminds us of the powerful role the Black community has in shaping Miami’s history and advancing the fight for racial justice and equality.”

The panel stems from HistoryMiami’s ongoing oral history project of the same name, which documents the historical and contemporary fight for racial justice in Miami. The initiative includes voices from African American, Haitian, Bahamian, and Afro-Latino communities, chronicling their contributions to civil rights from the 1920s to the present day.

As part of the Sip of History series, the discussion will be complemented by a signature Miami-inspired cocktail created by mixologist Gabriel Urrutia, Brand Specialist for Brugal 1888.
