Historians Explore Harriet Tubman’s Legacy at Miami Book Fair 2024

The Miami Book Fair 2024 will host a compelling conversation on Harriet Tubman’s life and legacy, featuring renowned historians Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black and Dr. Tiya Miles. The free event will take place on Sunday, November 24, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at Room 2106 in Building 2, 1st Floor, at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus.

Dr. Fields-Black, the author of COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War, will delve into Tubman’s leadership in the historic Combahee River Raid. This Civil War operation freed more than 700 enslaved individuals in South Carolina. As a descendant of a Black soldier who participated in the raid, Fields-Black offers a deeply personal and scholarly perspective on Tubman’s enduring impact on the Gullah Geechee community and African American history.

Joining her is Dr. Tiya Miles, an award-winning historian and author of Night Flyer, which reimagines Tubman’s humanity and resilience. Known for her work on African American history and cultural resistance, Miles brings a passionate and nuanced portrayal of Tubman’s life and legacy.

The event will include a Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage with the authors and explore their research and insights. A book signing will follow, providing an opportunity to meet the historians and discuss their work further.

Dr. Fields-Black is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and an authority on the African Diaspora, with groundbreaking research on rice cultivation, slavery, and the Civil War. She is also the daughter of Dr. Dorothy Fields, a prominent Miami activist and founder of The Black Archives. Dr. Miles, celebrated for her contributions to African American cultural studies, offers readers fresh perspectives on Tubman’s legacy through her innovative scholarship.

This event promises to offer rich insights into Harriet Tubman’s pivotal role in American history, making it a must-attend for history enthusiasts, educators, and anyone interested in untold stories of freedom and resistance.
