Miami-Dade County employees will now have access to an expanded paid parental leave policy, following the passage of an ordinance championed by County Commission Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III. The new policy doubles paid parental leave from six to 12 weeks for more than 30,000 county employees.
The ordinance provides Miami-Dade employees with 12 weeks of paid leave for bonding with a newborn or newly adopted child, a move intended to offer new parents financial stability while adjusting to their growing families.
“This change is a significant step forward for our county, our employees, and our community,” said Chairman Gilbert. “By expanding paid parental leave, we are investing in the wellbeing of our workforce and their families and strengthening Miami-Dade’s commitment to being a supportive and compassionate employer.”
Chairman Gilbert highlighted that this policy not only addresses the immediate needs of new parents but also represents a broader commitment to family values within the county workforce. The ordinance positions Miami-Dade as a leader in family-centered workplace policies, setting a precedent that advocates hope will influence other regions.
The new policy is seen as part of an ongoing effort to support employee wellbeing and enhance Miami-Dade County’s appeal as an employer.
