Liberty City Prepares 500 Students for National Walk to School Day Honoring Ruby Bridges

In a powerful tribute to civil rights icon Ruby Bridges, Liberty City will mobilize 500 students for the annual Ruby Bridges Walk and Math Matters Rally, hosted by the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT). The event will take place on November 14, National Walk to School Day, and aims to celebrate Bridges’ legacy while promoting educational equity and excellence in mathematics.

Students from Holmes Elementary School and Miami Northwestern Senior High School will gather alongside Liberty City community members and leaders to honor Bridges’ bravery. Sixty-four years ago, Bridges, then just six years old, became the first African American student to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans—a pivotal act that marked a significant milestone in the Civil Rights Movement.

The day will begin at Holmes Elementary School with a parade lineup at 8:50 a.m., followed by a student-led reenactment of Bridges’ historic walk at 9:00 a.m. The procession will conclude at the UTOPA Theater, where a rally and series of performances will commence. Highlights include a play about Bridges’ life, remarks from MDEAT Executive Director William “Bill” Diggs, and Google Software Engineer Randy Ramon, both emphasizing the value of resilience and education in overcoming obstacles.

A key focus of the rally will be the Math Matters initiative, which celebrates high-achieving students in mathematics. In a community where nearly 60% of students face challenges in math proficiency, MDEAT seeks to address these barriers by providing resources, mentorship, and community support to empower students.

“Contrary to stereotypes, Black students possess the potential and enthusiasm for math and STEM careers,” said MDEAT Executive Director William “Bill” Diggs in a press release. “What they need is exposure, encouragement, and community reinforcement to thrive.”

Liberty City’s celebration of Ruby Bridges not only honors her contribution to civil rights but also underscores the importance of math literacy as a path to economic opportunity.
