Hy-Lo News has launched the series “The Road to the 2025 Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant.” We’ll be Profiling Contestants Competing in the Miss; Ms/Mrs and Teen Divisions of the MBFLUSA Pageant.
Trinity Williams, the reigning Miss Black Coral Gables USA, is a shining example of determination, resilience, and community impact. Competing in the Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant, Trinity is driven by a mission to celebrate Black culture, empower women of color, and inspire young Black women to embrace their unique identities. Hy-Lo News Publisher Janey Tate speaks with Trinity about her motivations for joining the pageant, her personal journey from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to South Florida, and her vision to create spaces for women of color in media.
All interview question responses were edited for clarity and grammar.
Janey Tate: Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant?
Trinity Williams: I decided to compete in the Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant because it provides an incredible opportunity for personal growth, community impact, and cultural celebration. This pageant allows me to showcase my abilities and passions while representing the richness of Black culture. My goal is to be a positive role model and inspire other young Black women to be confident, ambitious, and proud of their Black girl magic!
JT: Where are you originally from and how has your upbringing impacted who you are today?
TW: I’m originally from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but my family moved to South Florida in 2018. We felt it was time to move to a new place with more growth opportunities and this was the best decision that could’ve been made! Growing up in a single parent family taught me the importance of hard work and staying connected to my roots. My mother’s support and strong family values instilled in me a drive to succeed while uplifting others around me. Being raised by a mother who valued education, demonstrated perseverance, and exemplified kindness has shaped me into the woman I am today. My upbringing has inspired me to set ambitious goals, pursue higher education, and remain committed to making a positive impact wherever I go.
JT: What is your pageant platform and why?
TW: My platform, Empowering Women of Color Through Media and Public Relations, focuses on helping women of color embrace their identity, share their stories, and inspire others by amplifying their voices in media. I’m passionate about providing women with the tools to advocate for themselves and create meaningful change by teaching media literacy, public speaking, and digital storytelling. I intend to found a Black-owned, female-led PR agency that encourages Black women to tell their own stories, their way because we deserve to do so. There is a dire need for women of color in the communication’s industry, and my goal is to provide a welcoming space for all of us to grow within this profession.
JT: Who is someone or people in your life who have helped you most on your journey to win the state pageant and what does that mean to you?
TW: My mother, Darria Stafford Williams, and sister, Aneesa Williams, have always been the best supporters of me and any endeavor I pursue, and I am forever grateful. They push me to get outside of my comfort zone and encourage me to always be my authentic self. I can never thank them enough for validating my ideas, speaking life to me, and believing in me whether I succeed or not. They both mean the world to me and I cannot express that enough! The love they’ve poured into me is what I intend to share with my sister queens and community moving forward.
JT: What will you be performing for the talent portion of the state competition and why?
TW: I will be performing a lyrical dance, accompanied by CeCe Winans’ gospel song “Never Have to be Alone”. I chose dance as my talent because the performing arts has always been a passion of mine. I’ve been a dancer for 19 years and love choreographing, dancing, interpreting music and sharing my creative vision with others. I’m also a Christian and have an immense love for our Lord and Savior so I want to give thanks to Him for being my beacon of light and inspiration. I also want others to feel uplifted and encouraged by this piece.
JT: What are you most looking forward to about the Miss Black Florida USA pageant statewide competition?
TW: I’m looking forward to meeting all of the Little Miss, Teen, Miss, Ms. and Mrs. contestants! I cannot wait to connect with Black women of all ages, soak in the beauty of having an opportunity like this one, and be blessed to share this experience together. We’d all love to be crowned as state titleholders, but it’s even more rewarding to be a part of this sisterhood with my sister queens!
JT: What have you learned about yourself on your journey to win the state title?
TW: During this journey I’ve learned that it truly does take a village and it’s okay to ask for help. A lot of times as women, and especially Black women, we feel the need to carry our baggage on our backs while holding the weight of the world on our shoulders. Yes, we are resilient, strong, and independent, but we need balance. I’ve learned that I’m not inconveniencing my support system by asking for support, that’s what they’re here for. By trying to do everything myself, I burnt out quicker and felt defeated so I’ve learned to slow down and accept help when needed.
JT: The Miss Black USA and Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant organizations champion the celebration of Black Women and their service, education and commitment to improving themselves and their community. Explain why you think this is an important mission of the organization and why you think it’s needed in today’s social climate.
TW: The Miss Black USA and Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant organizations celebrating the positive contributions Black women have made to our society is critical, especially in today’s social climate. A lot of times we are overlooked, undervalued, and outright disrespected, so spaces like this that allow us to be ourselves and celebrate our Black identities are so powerful. Black women deserve to receive their flowers and be honored for their service to their communities. We have to appreciate each other and celebrate each and every win that we can because it starts with us. Recognizing our service in the community, the impact being made on others, the dedication to give back and so much more. Organizations like these are vital for the celebration and uplifting of Black women everywhere.
