Hy-Lo News Publisher, Janey Tate, speaks with Deanna Perdue about her motivations, aspirations, and the values guiding her through this competition.
All interview question responses were edited for clarity and grammar.
Janey Tate: Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant?
Deanna Sophia Perdue: I decided to join the Miss Black Florida USA because I want to share my cause on a higher level, and inspire other teens to realize kindness makes a difference.
JT: Where are you originally from and how has your upbringing impacted who you are today?
DSP: I’m from Chicago, where I saw many homeless people struggling in the cold. That inspired me to start my 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help provide them with necessities.
JT: What is your pageant platform and why?
DSP: My platform is about helping teens in need by providing cozy and warm hoodies. I’ve seen the challenges these young people face, and each time I give a hoodie, I witness the positive impact it has on their lives. That’s why I work hard to make a difference.
JT: Who is someone or people in your life who have helped you most on your journey to win the state pageant and what does that mean to you?
DSP: My mom has been amazing, helping me discover who I am and teaching me the value of selflessness.
JT: What will you be performing for the talent portion of the state competition and why?
DSP: I’ll be performing “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra on my violin. When I was younger, seeing someone else play it inspired me to learn the violin.
JT: What are you most looking forward to about the Miss Black Florida USA pageant statewide competition?
DSP: I’m really looking forward to connecting with new people, building friendships, learning from others, and ready to have fun!!
JT: What have you learned about yourself on your journey to win the state title?
DSP: As I’ve competed, I’ve come to understand the profound impact that simple acts of kindness can have on people’s lives. Even the smallest gesture can hold immense value and meaning to someone else. This realization has inspired me to approach each interaction with more empathy and to give back whenever I can.
JT: The Miss Black USA and Miss Black Florida USA Scholarship Pageant organizations champion the celebration of Black Women and their service, education and commitment to improving themselves and their community. Explain why you think this is an important mission of the organization and why you think it’s needed in today’s social climate.
DSP: The Miss Black USA and Miss Black Florida USA pageants are essential because they celebrate Black women’s achievements, education, and service. This mission promotes positive representation and inspires young women to strengthen their communities.
