City of Miami to Host Special Screening of “Seeking Mavis Beacon” Documentary on September 21st

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the City of Miami, led by Chairwoman and District 5 Commissioner Christine King, along with the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), will host a special community screening of Seeking Mavis Beacon. The event will take place at the Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the screening beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Seeking Mavis Beacon is a documentary that delves into the mysterious story behind the iconic figure in the world of technology education, Mavis Beacon. Known for teaching millions how to type through the widely-used software Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, the Haitian-born model who served as the software’s face seemingly disappeared decades ago. In the film, two DIY detectives embark on a journey to find the elusive model, while exploring deeper questions surrounding identity and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping our perceptions.

Following the screening, a Q&A session will be moderated by well-known Haitian radio personality Carel Perdre. The panel will feature key members of the film’s production team, including Director Jazmin Renée Jones, Co-Collaborator Olivia McKayla Ross, Producer Guetty Felin, Cinematographer Yeelen Cohen, and Sound Recordist Joakim Cohen.

Seating for the event will be on a first-come, first-served basis. To RSVP, attendees can use the provided online form. For media inquiries or interview requests, Jessica Wade Pfeffer is the point of contact at jessica@jwipr.com.
