Miami-Dade County Celebrates Third Black Business Month: Empowerment through Entrepreneurship

Miami-Dade County has announced the return of Black Business Month, a month-long celebration dedicated to recognizing the significant contributions of Black entrepreneurs and business leaders in the community. The festivities will begin with a pre-kickoff event at the Stephen P. Clark Building on Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Black Business Month is part of the County’s ongoing commitment to fostering economic empowerment and prosperity within the Black community. “As goes Black business in Miami, so goes business in Miami-Dade County,” said Bill Diggs, Executive Director of the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust and Chairman of the Black Business Month Steering Committee. “This year, we aim to position ourselves at the epicenter of business growth in this top-ranked county. Miami-Dade County has repeatedly proven its resiliency, and now we must look forward to being the loudest voice for diversity and inclusion in the country.”

The initiative, championed by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne McGhee, aims to support and recognize the resilience, innovation, and excellence of Black-owned businesses across diverse industries. “The introduction of Black Business Month in Miami-Dade County represents a proactive initiative,” said McGhee. “It demonstrates our local government’s dedication to offering essential assistance and acknowledgment to these determined entrepreneurs.”

The month will feature a series of events, workshops, and networking opportunities designed to highlight the importance of Black-owned businesses in the local economy. Commissioner McGhee emphasized that the primary objective is to create a supportive environment for these businesses, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve greater success. “This designated month will catalyze enhanced backing, promote economic development, and strengthen our local economy,” McGhee added.

Chairman Oliver Gilbert III of the Board of County Commissioners echoed these sentiments, highlighting the role of Black-owned businesses in driving innovation and creating opportunities in the community. “As we embrace Black Business Month this August, we celebrate the extraordinary contributions of Black-owned businesses in Miami-Dade County. These enterprises are the heartbeat of our local economy,” said Gilbert. He also reaffirmed his commitment to fostering economic growth and inclusivity through local initiatives such as the Mom and Pop Small Business Grant program.

County Commissioner Marleine Bastien also expressed her gratitude for the County’s commitment to supporting Black-owned businesses. “As a Haitian woman of African descent, I am grateful for Miami-Dade County’s commitment to providing the support and recognition Black-owned businesses have earned and deserve,” Bastien said. “Through economic empowerment, Black-owned businesses will soar into success and influence, strengthening our communities for future generations.”

The celebration of Black Business Month is a collaborative effort led by the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust, the Black Business Month Steering Committee, the Black Affairs Advisory Board, and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. David Whitaker, President and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, emphasized the importance of small businesses in the hospitality and visitor ecosystem, noting that Black Business Month offers a unique opportunity to build new relationships within the community.

The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, the City of Miami Beach, the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, Jackson Health System, and other local organizations have also contributed to the diverse lineup of events planned for the month. “As we embrace Black Business Month, we seize the opportunity to empower and uplift these enterprises, recognizing their pivotal role in driving economic growth and fostering inclusive prosperity,” remarked G. Eric Knowles, President of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce.
