The Harlem Renaissance, a flourishing era of literary, visual and musical arts spanning the 1920s to the ’40s, painted a transformative picture of Black life for the world. “Silhouettes,” an exhibition exploring the Harlem Renaissance, delves into the role of art during this period, with a specific focus on collaborations between artists and writers in the creation of illustrated books. These works boldly challenged derogatory stereotypes while asserting the capacity for self-determination within the African American community.
On this episode of Can We Talk Podcast, Janey spoke with “Silhouettes” curator and Hampton Art Lovers founder Christopher Norwood and Shawn Christian, professor of English at Florida International University, and Wolfsonian staff, to learn more about the exhibit and why they believe Miamians should come out and experience it.
Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance is on view until TOMORROW, June 23rd and can be seen at The Wolfsonian-FIU located at 1001 Washington Ave. Miami Beach, FL 33139.
