The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce recently hosted its 2024 Annual Symposium and Business Leaders Luncheon at Jungle Island, honoring outstanding businesses and individuals while addressing the critical issue of affordable housing in Miami-Dade County.
The event recognized notable achievements in the business community, with awards presented to esteemed recipients:
- Michael A. Finney Corporate Business of the Year: JPMorgan Chase
- Dexter Foster Small Business of the Year: Hip Rock Star Advertising
- Large Non-Profit Organization of the Year: Ten North Group
- Small Non-Profit Organization of the Year: Be Strong International
- Rising Star of the Year: Jefferson Noel, Barbershop Speaks
- Heroes of Hospitality of the Year: Rosie Gordon-Wallace, DVCAI
- Board Member of the Year: Connie Kinnard
The highlight of the luncheon was the keynote address by Mr. Alex R. Ballina, Director of Miami-Dade Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD). The symposium also featured a panel discussion on “Building Black Wealth – Shaping the Future of Housing Development in South Florida’s Communities,” emphasizing the Chamber’s commitment to addressing the housing crisis facing Miami-Dade County.
Miami-Dade County is currently experiencing a significant lack of affordable housing, with the highest per-square-foot housing increase in America. This crisis disproportionately affects Black communities, threatening historic neighborhoods and cultural heritage.
The Chamber’s Annual Symposium served as a platform to discuss solutions to the housing crisis, bringing together leaders from government, business, academia, and the nonprofit sector. By facilitating dialogue and collaboration, the Chamber hopes to develop strategies to mitigate the impact of the housing crisis and ensure sustainable, equitable development in South Florida.
