Commissioner Keon Hardemon will be hosting the second annual Remembering a Legend: Father Gerard Jean-Juste Memorial and Celebration. This marks an occasion to remember and celebrate the impactful legacy of Father Gerard Jean-Juste, a beloved figure known for his unwavering dedication to social justice and community empowerment. The event will be held on Monday, May 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Caribbean Marketplace, 5925 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33137.
Father Jean-Juste was a Haitian Roman Catholic priest and prominent activist known for his tireless advocacy for Haitian immigrants in the United States and the people of Haiti. He became a voice of opposition against the government of interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue following the 2004 Haitian coup d’état. In the 1970s, Father Gerard Jean-Juste founded the Haitian Refugee Center in Little Haiti, which helped refugees with social services and legal assistance.
“Father Gerard Jean-Juste was a friend, a mentor, and a civil rights leader who fought for the rights of many in our community,” said Commissioner Hardemon in a press release. “His legacy of compassion, activism, and service continues to live on in the people he touched.”
Attendees can expect a variety of activities, including performances, guest speakers, and community tributes, all paying homage to Father Gerard Jean-Juste’s profound influence and dedication to uplifting others.
