The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center will be hosting its 9th annual Sankofa Jazz Concert, set to take place on April 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Wendell A. Narcisse Performing Arts Theatre, located at 6161 NW 22 Avenue in Miami.

This year’s headliner Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science has garnered praise from publications such as the New York Times and the Sydney Morning Herald. With a sound described as “a slow-funk project rooted in the rhetoric of protest” by the Times and “gritty and politically charged” by the Herald, the band is known for their dynamic blend of jazz, rock, rap, and R&B.

As part of the event, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center will recognize H.T. Smith and the historic Boycott Miami leaders Marilyn Holifield, Linda Kearson, Cynthia Everett, Cynthia Johnson Stacks, and Thomasina Williams at this year’s SANKOFA Jazz Concert.

“We demanded respect for Black leaders, respect for Black people, and respect for our hard-earned dollars – and we got it,” H.T. Smith commented to the AHCAC.

The boycott ended almost 34 years ago at the Center’s Narcisse Theatre where the concert is being performed. The end of the boycott marked significant gains in political and economic clout for African Americans.

“This Sankofa promises to be another historic event where we are honoring H.T. Smith and his cavalry that helped to bring Miami a sense of equity and justice,” said Marshall L. Davis, Managing Director of AHCAC, in a press release. “We look forward to the impact that musicians like Terri Lynn Carrington and other entertainers will have.”
