The exhibition runs from March 21 to June 15, 2024 in Historic Opa-locka
Ten North Group (formerly OLCDC) will be running Evidence of Contrary Instincts, an exhibition highlighting artworks by five women artists of African descent who powerfully visualize the Black experience, celebrating Women’s History Month.
Curated by Mercede Hankins, Evidence of Contrary Instincts features the works of Florine Démosthène and Mickalene Thomas, both of which are in Ten North Group’s permanent collection, and also includes several very special pieces from local artists such as VantaBlack, Rita Odibi, Carrington Ware, and Kandy G. Lopez.
“This exhibition not only exposes South Florida and the world to the works of these amazingly talented artists, but also furthers complex but necessary dialogues about the role that resilient Black women play in reshaping the narrative about art of the African Diaspora in contemporary society, while challenging the gender-based strictures that are the sub-rosa text of their narratives,” said exhibit curator Mercede Hankins in a press release.
Evidence of Contrary Instincts will be on view at the Art and Recreation Center located at The ARC at 675 Ali-Baba Avenue, Opa-locka, FL, 33054, from March 21 through June 15, 2024. The exhibition is accompanied by a range of programs and events.
