The Homestead Senior High School Broncos football team is headed back to the State Championship Game for the second year in a row and will face the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders on Dec. 9th at 3pm. The big game will take place at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Kionne McGhee, who was born and raised in Homestead and represents South-Dade for the Board of County Commission, has made sure the football team, coaches, school administration, band, cheerleaders and the athletes’ parents make it to the State game without of the added stress of fundraising to get there.
“Word on the street Kionne L McGhee just dropped over $25k on transportation, lodging, food, new gear, and them 🔥 uniforms on Homestead Broncos as they take Exit 1 to Exit 209A to bring home that State Championship Title #YoStead 🐎 🔥 🏆 #DownSouthTakeOver,” said Palmetto native, Solomon Braggs II, in a Facebook post.
We reached out to the office of Commissioner McGhee to confirm the comment and they shared with us that the Commissioner actually gave more than $40,000 to cover the expenses listed by Braggs.
“I am immensely proud of the Homestead Senior High School football team. Everyone involved has been working incredibly hard not to have the chance to play for the championship title. They deserve the opportunity to win big, and I want to make sure we can make that dream a reality. I am committed to fully supporting our youth and their endeavors,” said Commissioner McGhee in a release.
“They traveled from Orlando to the 1 but we got the job done! Broncos head back to the state championship for the second time in school history,” said Homestead High School Football team in a social media statement following their regional championship win last week.
Five South Florida high school teams, including the Broncos, will head to the State Championship games– with South Florida making up almost a 3rd of the teams participating. This is more than any other market in the state of Florida. Hy-Lo News is sending a huge congratulations to all the teams who will be competing.
