The Historic Society and the South-Dade Branch of the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce the upcoming Run It Back 5K Run/Walk, set to take place on September 30, 2023, at Zoo Miami. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will serve as the Race Grand Marshal for this inaugural event, which aims to uplift, empower, and amplify Black businesses in South Dade.
The Run It Back 5K Run/Walk will kick off at 7 a.m. and offer participants a unique opportunity to run a scenic route through the zoo. As runners dash past lions, giraffes, and elephants, they will be doing so with a noble purpose – supporting the thriving Black businesses and historic preservation efforts in South-Dade.
With the support of Commissioner Kionne McGhee and the Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust, participants will receive a branded t-shirt, engage in a group yoga stretch, and take home a participation medal to commemorate the day. Furthermore, all attendees will gain admission to Zoo Miami.
For those seeking a competitive edge, the event will recognize the top three runners in designated categories with placement medals. There will also be a lively send-off and a Miami-centric music set by DJ Nasty of the hit morning show, The Pac Jam on WEDR 99 Jamz. Various vendors will be on-site and the morning will conclude with a group yoga session.

The Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1974 by a group of Black business leaders, has played a pivotal role in advocating for the needs of the growing Black business community in South Florida. Over its forty-plus years of existence, the Chamber has remained a steadfast support system, even during social unrest and declines in black business infrastructures. In 2022, the South Branch of the Chamber was established to focus on the specific needs of Chamber members in the Southern Area of Miami-Dade County.
The Historic Society, established in 2013, has a mission centered on collecting, preserving, and disseminating archival information related to Black South Floridians. The society aims to inspire, nurture, and instill a resilient spirit for life in underserved Black South Florida communities. Additionally, it organizes cultural events to enhance the economic vibrancy of South Dade by amplifying the viability of the community.
