Fathers M.I.A. Collaborate with Local First Responders for Annual ‘As We Honor You’ Spring Gala

Fathers M.I.A. are dads making a difference by bridging the gap between fathers that have been disconnected from their families.

On April 15th, Fathers M.I.A. hosted its 5th annual ‘As We Honor You’ Scholarship Gala at the Signature Grand in Davie. This event is meant to celebrate students, especially young girls, who have persevered in their education despite not experiencing the love and comfort of a father.

Every year, Fathers M.I.A. partners up with local law enforcement and first responders that volunteer their time in participating in a simulated father-daughter dance. Selected participants are gifted scholarships after completing the required 4 weeks program which includes essay prep, etiquette training, online and social media safety, group therapy with a licensed psychologist, and lessons on the importance positive affirmations.

“It gives the young ladies a sense of understanding that not only is there an organization but there’s a community that really is there for them and supporting them,” said Robert Jackson III, co-founder of Fathers M.I.A.

Fathers M.I.A. says this event also helps to improve the relationships between the community and law enforcement.

“What better way to have them engage with each other… having them at least humanize each other,” said Gerald Hawkins Sr., co-founder of Father M.I.A. “We want to make sure that everyone sees in the community that law enforcement are here to support.”
