The Republican Governor silently signed the bill late Thursday night.
If you are a woman in Florida, your rights to an abortion are currently under attack. In case you missed it, Gov. Ron DeSantis officially signed the GOP led 6-week abortion ban into Florida law.
The law would make Florida one of the most restrictive states in the country to obtain an abortion and follows moves by other Republican-led states to quickly snip the procedure or access to abortion medication since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer.
Under legislation, victims of incest, rape or human trafficking could get an abortion up to 15-weeks into a pregnancy but would need to provide a “restraining order, police report, medical record or other evidence.”
The bill would also ban doctors from prescribing abortion pills via telehealth and require medication be given in person by a physician, not by mail.
In a move to delay the bill’s passage, Democratic leaders from across the state filed dozens of amendments to the proposal, all of which were rejected by Republicans.
“Women’s health and their personal right to choose is being stolen,” said Democratic Rep. Felicia Simone Robinson. “So I ask: Is Florida truly a free state?”
History shows that abortion bans only stop legal abortions, and for many young people, women of color, or women from low income communities who don’t have the luxury of traveling elsewhere to receive abortion procedures, this 6-week abortion ban will disproportionately affect them the most.
The ban will only take effect if Florida’s current 15-week ban is overturned by the Supreme Court. Note, however, the Supreme Court is currently controlled by conservatives.
