Congresswoman Wilson Teams Up with Boys & Girls Club Miami-Dade to Fund New After School Program at Skyway Elementary

The Boys & Girls Club opened up a new location at Skyway Elementary School and its been named in honor of Congresswoman Frederica Wilson!

Congresswoman Wilson, who was on hand at the ribbon cutting, presented a check for $6.4 million to the Boys & Girls Club Miami-Dade to fund the new facility, which will include a tennis court and putting greens.

The U.S. Department of Treasury allocated $6.4 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

The funds will also enrich activities at the existing Northwest Club in the Pinewood neighborhood and the NFL Club at Gwen Cherry Park in Gladeview.

According to statistics provided by the Congresswoman’s office, participation in after-school programs reduces juvenile crimes by up to 75% and decreases drug use by 49%. 

“Prevention is the key,” Wilson said during the ribbon cutting. “We can either pay now and invest in our children, or we can pay later and invest in prisons.”

The Dr. Frederica S. Wilson Club will serve over 100 children, providing after school and summer programs for youth in Miami Gardens and parts of the surrounding area.
