Watch: New Exhibit Opens Highlighting a 1940s Case of Four Black Men Accused of Killing a White Man in Broward County; Opening Ceremony Kicks off Tonight at Old Dillard Museum

Have you heard of Miranda Warnings? Years before Miranda v Arizona there was Chambers v Florida– a case where four Broward County Black men were charged for the killing of an elderly white man in Pompano Beach. The T.J. Reddick Bar Association and Old Dillard Museum have curated an exhibit, under the leadership of Attorney Tia Gibbs, that will share the story of this landmark case and its legacy that still affects to this day.

This year marks the 83rd anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Case, Chambers v Florida. The case involved the murder of Robert Darsey. Mr. Darsey, an elderly white man owned a business in Pompano Beach, Florida. Over 25 African American men were rounded up and questioned for days regarding Mr. Darsey’s murder. Four young black men were eventually charged with the murder.

The men that were charged were Izell Chambers, Charley Davis, Jack Williamson, and Walter Woodard. This case was one of the first and few occasions where the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the black men finding that the police officers coerced their confessions. The attorneys for the accused were Florida Attorney S.D.McGill and a young Thurgood Marshall.

The Grand Opening of the Exhibit, Chambers v Florida, opens Feb. 9th at 6:00 p.m.
at Old Dillard Museum, 1009 NW 4th St, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311. The exhibit will be open for the entire month of February 2023.
