Black South Florida took over the Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino for The Luxe Day at the Derby.
Melanated ladies and gentlemen were decked out in fascinators, floppy hats and dapper suits as they enjoyed a view of the horse race from three luxury suites. Gulfstream has never looked as colorful and fabulous. I am talking hats in every color embellished with lace net and tulle — men in floral print and bow ties. Women wore pearls and draped dresses. It was glorious.
@laceynicoleig and @shevvy_malibu curated the event. It is part of a series of luxury events bringing together Black people to enjoy the finer things in life. The organizers lead a group called Luxe Lifestyle, which gathers for events every other month.
The all-inclusive event included an open bar with champagne, wine and mixed cocktails on demand. Guests feasted on a buffet prepared by a top-notch chef. The event was topped off with vendors selling hand-made and designer jewelry and a live painting performance by artist Harold Claudio.
Claudio displayed some never-before-seen pieces exclusively for the event. Tesla also treated guests to test drives of the latest vehicle model. All that fanciness, I wanted to break into a British accent and stick out my pinky finger.
Anyhow, Darling. People from various age groups traveled from as far as Palm Beach for the semi-outdoor event. The best part was connecting with other South Floridians with a shared experience. I got to take a pause from the day-to-day adulting, kick back, enjoy the ambience and at times have a pleasant nonverbal conversation. “I see you, Sister,” with a bright, genuine smile.
It’s a sensational vibe when Black people gather in a well-coordinated manner.
The Luxe Lifestyle’s next event, The Atlanta Garden Soiree Weekend, is April 29 in Atlanta, Georgia.
