Iconic Actor and Activist, Sidney Poitier, Passes Away At Age 94

The world has lost an iconic man with the death of the great actor, Sidney Poitier. He passed away in the Bahamas at age 94.

Poitier was born February 20, 1927 in Miami while his family was visiting the city. The Bahamian-American would go on to become one the greatest actors of the 20th Century and became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1963.

He was also a film director, activist, and ambassador. Poitier would received two further Academy Award nominations, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, six BAFTA nominations, eight Laurel nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination.

Poitier was one of the last surviving major stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema, and after the death of Kirk Douglas in 2020, was the oldest living and earliest surviving male Academy Award winner until his own death in 2022. From 1997 to 2007, Poitier served as Bahamian Ambassador to Japan.

He leaves behind a great legacy that opened the doors for many actors including Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and so many more. Today we honor this legend  for all the work he’s done to advance the image of Black people in television and film. Rest in Power King Sidney Poitier. Job well done!
