Also my thoughts on visiting other communities throughout Miami-Dade during Art Basel
By Janey Tate (hylonews@gmail.com)
Art Basel is over and Soul Basel is done, however you can get a glimpse into my experience of the weekend through pictures and videos. If you’re like me, then you’re probably jonesing for more art, fashion, parties and random fun that Art Basel provides.
This year I made a note to visit other communities throughout Miami-Dade county who got in on the Art Basel fun, hence me experiencing Soul Basel in Overtown for the first (but definitely not the last) time, and discovering The Arc art gallery in Opa-Locka. But I definitely visited Wynwood and Miami Beach, which are ground zero for all the Art Basel events. I feel you can’t say you’ve “basel’d” (yes I just made up a word lol) properly without visiting one or both places.
But to note, all of Miami-Dade has rich culture, history and a life of it’s own. However, many people only think they can have a good time on South Beach, in Downtown Miami and Wynwood. That simply isn’t true. As a Miami Native, I had to break out of that mindset myself of only thinking I can have fun in those places, so to my tourist brothers and sisters I wont hold it against you ;-). However, I encourage you to venture across the other side of the bridge (as we natives tend to say) and learn about “the real”Miami. I believe that Black neighborhoods should not be left out of your exploration (FYI: We do have some of the best food around in our communities, but I’ll get into that on another post when I list the best places to eat some of our favorite Miami dishes).
I’d also like to give a shout out to organizers in North Miami as well for getting in on the Art Basel fun. There was a pre-Art Basel event that took place Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015 at Dalues Museum & Art Gallery. The event was planned by The Infiniti Group, Simon Says Marketing and JNICK Management Group.
Viewing art is a great way for us all to come together and have common ground, and Art Basel events do a great job of bringing many types of people together. Enjoy my pictures and videos below and so long until next year’s events, which I’m sure will be bigger and better.
