NAACP Miami-Dade Closes out Women’s History Month with Community-Centered “Sisters of Strength” Event in Little Haiti

The NAACP Miami-Dade Branch closed out Women’s History Month with “Sisters of Strength: The Power of Her Voice,” a community talk, mixer, and art experience held March 28 at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex.

Hosted by the branch’s Women in the NAACP (WIN) Committee, the event brought together women from across the community for an afternoon centered on connection, conversation, and creativity. From panel discussions to an art exhibit and wellness resources, the gathering focused on civic engagement, cultural expression, and collective empowerment.

The event was held in partnership with the “Beyond Words: Women of Mother Earth” exhibition, curated by Carl Juste, and featured artwork by Maria Daniel Balcazar. Collaborators included the Florida International University Public Humanities Lab, Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance, iWitness, and Iris Photo Collective.

“This gathering reflects the power of women coming together in unity, purpose, and strength,” said Gabrielle Charles, chairwoman of the WIN Committee, in a press statement. “Through meaningful conversation and shared experiences, we continue building a stronger and more connected community.”

The program featured a panel moderated by Dr. Rebecca Friedman of FIU, with speakers including NAACP leadership, civic engagement advocates, and legal and academic voices discussing issues impacting women locally.

Beyond conversation, the event also delivered direct resources. A mobile unit offered free mammogram screenings for uninsured women, while NAACP representatives provided voter registration on site—tying the event’s message back to real-world action and access.

Guests also tapped into the creative side of the experience, enjoying music, networking, and curated bites by Chef Tameka Bennett inside the gallery space.
