Gov. DeSantis Signs Bill to Rename Palm Beach International Airport After Donald J. Trump

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially signed legislation, House Bill 919,  to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in honor of the 47th President. Under the new law, the facility will be rebranded as the President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

The bill marks a significant tribute to the President in his home state. The airport serves as the primary gateway for the President when traveling to his Mar-a-Lago estate.

The name change is slated to take effect on July 1, 2026. While the Governor’s signature finalizes the state’s intent, the transition involves significant logistical and financial requirements:

WPTV reports that the rebranding is expected to cost as much as $5.5 million for new signage, branding, and other updates. This includes a requested appropriation to cover the full scope of the overhaul, including navigational updates and telephone system messaging.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must now update its global navigational charts and databases.

The Trump Organization has filed for trademark rights for the airport’s new name to protect the brand, though they stated they do not intend to charge the state licensing fees.

The move has sparked sharp criticism from state Democratic leaders, who argue the expenditure is a “political stunt” that ignores the economic needs of working families.

House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa, criticized the move on Monday, stating via WLRN that DeSantis and Republicans “decided to prioritize wasting five million of your taxpayer dollars on renaming an airport after the President.”

“Your money is being misused to celebrate the man who caused gas prices to rise to over four dollars a gallon, grocery costs to shoot up, and health care prices to spike,” Driskell said. “It’s clear Tallahassee Republicans care more about political stunts than they care about your wallet.”

Other Black leaders, including State Senator Barbara Sharief, have expressed concern to outlets such as CBS News that the bill sets a precedent allowing the state to preempt local control over other major Florida airports, such as Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International.

While naming landmarks after presidents is a long-standing American tradition, renaming an airport for a sitting president is rare. Historically, these honors occur years—or even decades—after a president leaves office or passes away.

Currently, roughly 25% of U.S. Presidents (12 out of 47) have an airport named in their honor, as outlined by Smart Politics. President Trump’s inclusion in this group while still in office marks a departure from the typical historical timeline for such dedications.
