Florida Legislature Set to Make History with Teddy Bridgewater Act; Sen. Shevrin Jones Teases Teddy Bridgewater Day

In a historic move, the Florida Senate voted unanimously (38–0) to pass the Teddy Bridgewater Act, a law that will protect high school coaches who mentor student-athletes without fear of penalty. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk, where its signing is expected to make history—and possibly mark the first-ever Teddy Bridgewater Day this summer.

As reported by Hy-Lo News, the legislation was inspired by NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was suspended while coaching at Miami Northwestern Senior High for providing “impermissible benefits” to his players, including meals, transportation, and recovery services. The bill now ensures that coaches acting in good faith to support student-athletes are protected, recognizing the critical role mentorship plays in youth development.

Senator Shevrin Jones, the bill’s sponsor, has been instrumental in getting this bill to the finish line.

“It’s one of my biggest accomplishments as a player and as a human being,” said Teddy Bridgewater in a WPLG interview. “My hat goes off to Senator Jones. Man, it’s awesome that he picked up the story and just took it to the Capitol. And now we have a bill.”

Jones praised Bridgewater’s humility and dedication, saying:

“The real icing on the cake was hearing from [Teddy]. He’s as cool and humble as they come.”

The Act allows head coaches to spend up to $15,000 per team, per year on items such as food, transportation, and recovery equipment, provided expenditures are reported to the Florida High School Athletic Association and are not used for recruiting. The law also reflects Bridgewater’s commitment to student safety, giving coaches flexibility to ensure kids get home safely after practices or games.

Jones emphasized the legislation’s broader significance:

“No coach should ever be penalized for stepping up to protect the well-being of a student-athlete. This legislation makes sure that when coaches act in good faith to support and safeguard our kids, they are protected, not punished.”

Looking ahead, Jones teased what’s to come:

“Out of the 237 bills heading to the Governor’s desk, this one is about to make history in honor of a hometown hero. And stay tuned… Teddy Bridgewater Day is coming early this summer.”

With the Governor’s signature expected soon in July 2026, the Teddy Bridgewater Act will serve as both a practical safeguard for coaches and a symbolic celebration of mentorship, community, and the positive impact of leaders like Bridgewater.
