A new Florida mandate is sparking outrage as it strips away multilingual access at the DMV—a move critics say targets the state’s diverse communities and creates a more dangerous environment for everyone on the road.
According to NBC 6, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has officially eliminated the option for driver’s license exams to be taken in any language other than English. This means that the written and skills tests will no longer be offered in Spanish or Haitian Creole, and the use of interpreters is strictly prohibited.
The human impact of this policy was seen immediately in South Florida, where residents expressed deep frustration.
For many in the Black community, particularly the Haitian-American population in South Florida, the stakes are even higher. While a brief “transition period” was announced for Spanish speakers with existing appointments, NBC 6 reports that this leniency does not apply to everyone.
Reporter Hatzel Vela noted the disparity, stating, “Again, let’s remind you this only applies to Spanish speakers. So people who speak Haitian Creole have to take the test in English.”
While Spanish speakers have until March 31 to clear pending appointments, Creole speakers are being forced into English testing immediately.
Governor Ron DeSantis and state officials are defending the move as a “safety issue,” claiming drivers must be able to read road signs in English. However, community members aren’t buying it.
“If it’s a security issue, why now then?” asked a resident.
The sentiment on the ground is that this policy is less about safety and more about exclusion. Residents speaking with NBC 6 off-camera called the move “simply racist”, while a 16-year-old resident, who just received his restricted license, pointed out the logical flaw in the state’s argument: “A language doesn’t define if you should drive or not… I do think that to a certain extent it is unfair.”
Experts told NBC 6 there is no data suggesting drivers who test in foreign languages pose a greater threat, especially since traffic signs use universal symbols.
Advocates fear this will lead to more unlicensed and uninsured drivers on the road as people are forced to drive to survive, but are blocked by an “English-only” technical exam.
