Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is officially making his move for Florida’s 20th Congressional District in the 2026 midterm elections. He confirmed the news on This Week in South Florida on February 15, 2026, marking a major turning point from his days as a music mogul and high school football coach.
Campbell is targeting the seat currently held by Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. His district covers a wide and diverse stretch, including central and northern Broward County and western Palm Beach County. He decided to jump in now because he feels these areas—specifically places like Belle Glade and Riviera Beach—are “underserved” and lack a representative who is truly engaged with the stakeholders.
“Listening to the heartbreak of these people… they’re talking about the housing issue, they’re talking about losing a prison that employed so many people… and you realize there are issues,” he said. “In Riviera Beach, they got a water problem… they just need good representation.”
One of his most unique selling points is his claim of bipartisan influence. Despite running as a Democrat, Campbell asserts that he has a direct line to powerful Republican figures like President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He argues that this “speed dial” access makes him more effective than a traditional politician:
“Who’s going to be able to go talk to Marco Rubio? Who’s going to be able to go talk to Donald Trump? Me. I’m the only one that can do that. Nobody else in this race… I mean, I got Marco Rubio on speed dial right now.”
His transition to full-time candidate meant stepping down from his coaching role at Miami Edison High School. He explained that coaching is a year-round commitment to being a father figure and mentor, and he didn’t want to give the students anything less than 100% while he pursues this seat.
While he has a controversial history that opposition researchers might target, Campbell seems unfazed, noting that his life is an open book and his community service speaks louder than his past lyrics.
The race is shaping up to be a high-profile battle, especially given the heavy Democratic lean of the district. With the backing of the hip-hop industry and a decade of community activism, “Uncle Luke” is betting that his “keeping it real” approach will resonate more than standard political polish.
“Every artist that I produce and every artist by creating southern hip hop, will be donating to this campaign,” he said. “You don’t get them things done unless you’ve done things in the community.”
