Polls closed Tuesday night on the last round of municipal runoffs in Miami-Dade County, deciding key leadership races in Miami, Miami Beach, and Hialeah.
The results, reported by Miami Herald, which finalized seats left undecided after the November 4 general election, usher in new leadership and cement strong mandates for local councils.
City of Miami: Historic Mayoral Win
The closely watched race for Mayor of Miami resulted in an historic victory and a clear shift at City Hall.
Mayor: Eileen Higgins won decisively, securing 59.29% of the vote against opponent Emilio T. González. Higgins will be the city’s first woman mayor. Additionally, Higgins is the first Democrat to become mayor of Miami since 1997.
Commission District 3: Rolando Escalona won the hard-fought battle for the commission seat, defeating former Commissioner Frank Carollo with 53.32% of the vote. This victory ends the long-standing Carollo presence in the District 3 seat.
Miami Beach: Clear Mandate for Commission
Miami Beach voters chose a new face for their commission with an overwhelming margin.
Commission Group I: Monica Matteo-Salinas secured the seat with a landslide victory, taking 71.17% of the vote against Monique Pardo Pope.
Hialeah: Strong Council Results
Two seats on the Hialeah City Council were decided with high margins, giving strong mandates to the newcomers.
Councilmember Group III: Gelien Perez dominated the race, winning with 79.7% of the vote against Jessica Castillo.
Councilmember Group IV: William “Willy” Marrero also earned a large mandate, securing 70.92% of the vote against Javier Morejon.
