Jayne Kennedy Brings Plain Jayne Book Tour to AARLCC in Fort Lauderdale

Jayne Kennedy's book tour for her memoir "Plain Jayne" took place at the AARLCC in Fort Lauderdale on September 16. The event, featuring a discussion with Dr. Tameka Hobbs, highlighted Kennedy's groundbreaking achievements in Hollywood and sports broadcasting, her friendship with Muhammad Ali, and her upcoming perfume line, inspiring the audience with her journey.

Hollywood trailblazer, television pioneer, and author Jayne Kennedy brought her much-anticipated Plain Jayne book tour to the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, September 16. The evening, presented in partnership with the Friends of AARLCC, offered fans an intimate look into Kennedy’s life, legacy, and bestselling memoir.

The program opened with a ticketed meet-and-greet before transitioning into a captivating conversation between Kennedy and AARLCC Regional Manager Dr. Tameka Hobbs. Kennedy shared candid stories tracing her path from childhood dreams in Ohio to breaking barriers in Hollywood, sports broadcasting, and fitness.

She recalled her grandmother lovingly nicknaming her “Fancy Prancy” after spotting her four-year-old self strutting around the yard with rhinestone glasses and a bold declaration that she would one day become a Hollywood star. “I didn’t even know what a star was,” Kennedy laughed, “but I knew I wanted to be one.”

Plain Jayne:A Memoir, has been described as a bestseller by her publisher and is reportedly topping sales charts in certain categories, chronicling Kennedy’s experiences working with legends like Muhammad Ali, Sammy Davis Jr., and Marla Gibbs. She also opens up about breaking barriers in television, including her groundbreaking work on The NFL Today, where she fought to secure a place in an industry that was not always welcoming to women or people of color.

The conversation turned poignant as Kennedy spoke about her early days in television, including her history-making run on CBS’s The NFL Today. “They told me, ‘We can’t have two Blacks on the desk.’ So they restructured the entire show to make room for me — but only on a six-week contract. I had to fight tooth and nail to stay, but I knew if I didn’t, that door would close for women who came after me,” she said, drawing applause from the audience.

One of the evening’s most unforgettable moments came when Kennedy shared stories of her deep friendship with Muhammad Ali. To the crowd’s surprise, his ex-wife Dr. Khalila Camacho-Ali was seated in the audience. The two embraced as Kennedy recounted the many chapters of their lifelong bond, including a vivid memory of spotting Ali sitting quietly on top of a Rolls-Royce outside LAX. “Of all the memories I have of him, that was the one that reminded me — the whole world loved this man, and yet he could still be alone.”

In addition to her memoir, Kennedy revealed she is preparing to launch a new signature perfume line, describing the project as an extension of her journey to empower women and celebrate resilience.

The evening closed with a book signing, where attendees picked up copies of Plain Jayne. Kennedy’s warm storytelling and powerful reflections left the audience with a sense of both nostalgia and renewed inspiration, reminding everyone why she remains an icon of Black excellence and female empowerment.
