Vice Chairman Kionne McGhee Speaks Up to Save Miami Community-Based Organizations

Miami-Dade is facing a massive $400 million budget shortfall—and essential community-based organizations are on the chopping block. Vice Chairman Kionne McGhee has been vocal about their importance.

“The movement is here,” he said. “Our community heroes—nonprofits and CBOs feeding families, mentoring youth, and uplifting neighborhoods—shall not be denied. Together, our advocacy makes support inevitable.”

In August 2025, he introduced legislation to create a CBO Trust Fund—a long-term solution that would provide nonprofits with stable funding. McGhee is also pushing for budget transparency and urging the community to show up, speak out, and demand better.

If the cuts go through, South Dade could be hit especially hard, threatening parks and cultural arts. Even fire rescue response times might be affected.

At a recent Board of County Commissioners meeting, community members spoke in favor of saving community-based organizations.

One said, “These CBOs are Miami-Dade County’s safety net. We are who the county relies on to help our most vulnerable.”

Another added, “CBOs not only serve residents, they also employ nearly 77,000 people in our county. Cuts put both community stability and local jobs at risk.”

Amid this fight, McGhee secured a $100 million investment from Tillman Fiber to expand high-speed internet across South Dade—bringing jobs and tech access to neighborhoods that need it most. But, the fight continues.

Bottom line: This is a critical moment for Black Miamians. It’s time to protect what matters most.
