In her latest appearance on The Baller Alert Show, Haitian American and Miami-bred entertainer Jessie Woo unpacked the complex and often tense relationship between Black and Hispanic communities in Miami.
Woo reflected on how recent federal immigration crackdowns have struck close to home — particularly after the Trump administration’s move to revoke humanitarian parole for over half a million Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans. The policy shift has triggered swift ICE removals affecting children, elders, and long-standing community members.
A previous HyLo News article explores how historic inequities and tensions have persisted among Black and Hispanic communities in Miami for generations.
Woo also pointed to the political allegiance many Hispanic Miamians, namely Cubans, have shown to Donald Trump, referencing the viral “I Will Vote for Donald Trump” song as an example.
“Miami is the home of white Hispanics,” Woo said, explaining that many Hispanics in Miami align themselves with white power structures. She added that her worst experiences with racism have come from Hispanics, rather than white Americans.
Her candid remarks shed light on a deep and unresolved racial divide in South Florida. The remaining question: Where do we go from here?
