The Miami Foundation Offers $2 Million in College Scholarships for Local Students – Deadlines Approaching in April and May!

To help alleviate the financial burden of higher education, The Miami Foundation is offering more than $2 million in scholarships to deserving South Florida students. These scholarships, funded by city, county, public school district, and private donor contributions, support students with diverse interests, including science, the arts, community service, and law, as well as those with financial need.

To make scholarship access easier, The Miami Foundation centralizes all scholarship information at miamifoundation.org/scholarships, helping families take advantage of these crucial funding opportunities—especially since Florida students left more than $350 million in scholarships unclaimed during the 2023-2024 school year.

“Our students are the ones who will define the future of Greater Miami, and they need our support to realize their full leadership potential,” said Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation, in a press release. “We want every eligible student in South Florida to have access to scholarships. By partnering with local businesses and organizations we’re expanding financial opportunities, helping students succeed in Florida colleges, keeping talent in-state, improving the region’s skilled workforce, and building a stronger future for Miami.”

Partner organizations include The Related Group, The Aronovitz Family, The Ortega Foundation, and The College Assistance Program (CAP, Inc.), a nonprofit organization operating with full cooperation from The Miami Foundation and the Miami-Dade County School (M-DCPS) Board. CAP, Inc. supports M-DCPS students who have exhausted all avenues of financial assistance but still have significant unmet financial needs.

Despite the availability of financial aid, too many students fail to take advantage of these resources. Recent data reveals that the Class of 2023 left more than $4 billion in Pell Grants unused by not completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. In Florida alone, students forfeited nearly $354 million in potential funding, according to the National College Attainment Network.

Tapping into additional scholarships like those offered by The Miami Foundation can make accessing higher education a reality for many, particularly considering that Florida ranks among the top states for affordable higher education, offering the 9th highest full- time grant aid in the country, according to the College Board. In 2022-23, Florida institutions had the lowest published tuition and fees for full-time in-state students at flagship universities—just $6,380.

In addition to supporting students, The Miami Foundation provides opportunities for donors and businesses to establish or contribute to scholarship funds, further strengthening educational access for Miami-Dade’s future workforce. Interested donors should contact The Miami Foundation for more information at https://miamifoundation.org/fordonors/.

With some deadlines as early as April, students wanting to maximize their financial aid opportunities are encouraged to apply for The Miami Foundation’s scholarships as soon as possible. Last year The Foundation gave 883 student scholarships totaling $2.2 million. Details on this year’s applications are at www.miamifoundation.org/scholarships/.
